Laboratory Diagnosis of Protozoan Diseases

چکیده
This text is the composite work of 27 authors, all of whom are active investigators of diseases of viral and rickettsial etiology. Approximately one third of the book is devoted to a detailed discussion of the nature and properties of these infectious agents. Included in this portion are also considerations of egg and tissue culture technics, as well as methods of virus purification and titration. The remainder of the work deals with specific diseases and their etiological agents. The discussion under each infection is arranged in a logical order starting with a review of the history and clinical picture of the disease and then following with a consideration of its pathology and etiology. Finally, the treatment, epidemiology, and control of the infections are dealt with. The diseases presented are those most commonly seen in medical practice plus many which have become known through the broadening experiences of the late war. It is likely that this volume will be most satisfactory for the research worker and teacher in the fields of virus and rickettsial infection. The medical student and practitioner, on the other hand, will find much valuable material, but may experience some difficulty in gleaning desired information promptly from the mass of detail presented. The first portion of the book is amply illustrated. Unfortunately, however, particularly for the medical student, the section dealing with the various diseases does not contain an abundance of pictures illustrating the dinical and pathological aspects of these infections. This volume represents a very valuable contribution to the fields of virus and rickettsial research. Here is brought together information which otherwise would have to be taken piecemeal from an enormous literature. The investigator now has a comprehensive guide which will direct him toward the acquisition of further information along numerous selected lines. This book will be a welcomed addition to his library. -. W. SHRIGLEY
